During the recent Women in Science and Technology event sponsored by AWIS, I was reminded of the importance of mentoring through sessions at the conference and in speaking with scientists. I realized the SDBN could make a difference by providing a mentoring program to help our members. We’ll work out the details based on your feedback, and initially we’ve identified the topics listed below and plan to match mentors and mentees based on your interests.
- Career advice
- Gender issues
- Personal branding
- Scientific writing
- Family/work balance
- Transitioning to industry
We’ll also add more mentoring topics as needed and collect data about the top choices. At the event we’ll indicate your interests on your nametag, which will help you to find a match during the speed networking (and if you haven’t been before, check out this explainer).
We’re lucky to have two great speakers to lead our discussion on the new mentoring program. Steve Scott has mentored many entrepreneurs and executives through his work at CONNECT and the Life Science Roundtable, and he will talk about the “Why?” of mentoring. Heather Buschman, a key member of the SDBN team, has been working with another SDBN organizer, Jill Roughan, to develop the “What and How” of the program, and she’s got a great presentation as well.

Not sure you’re qualified to be a mentor? We all have areas of expertise, even younger scientists can mentor older ones on new trends such as social media. The benefits of advising and connecting with others are numerous. We plan to get your feedback at the event and provide some advice on mentoring, click here to register and get started!
We are looking for sponsors for this popular event, contact us to affordably reach more than 10,000 local life science professionals.
