The San Diego biotech industry has seen many phases and trends throughout its history, and genomics has remained an area in which we have always excelled. We can look to many factors for this achievement, such as the strong research and bioinformatics capabilities of our universities, the entrepreneurial environment that fosters the founding and growth of genomics companies, and our fantastic climate that attracts seasoned scientists who have their choice of locales to settle. J. Craig Venter’s decision to found Synthetic Genomics in 2005 in San Diego was a key development for in our region, as it brought capital, talent, and enthusiasm for genomics research and its commercialization. In 2010, Venter and colleagues created the first synthetic life using groundbreaking DNA synthesis technologies. Now, 5 years later, and almost 15 years since the first human genome was sequenced, Synthetic Genomics is doing groundbreaking work in the areas of cell and tissue engineering, synthetic genomes, and DNA synthesis. Synthetic Genomics Vaccines is an SGI business unit leveraging its breakthrough core technology to create advanced vaccines and therapeutics that will have the greatest positive impact on human health. The SGI-DNA business unit is making these technologies available to research scientists.
