SDBN November 30th 2015 DNA on TAP: The Genomics of Brewing Event

In 2012 we featured White Labs at an SDBN event and heard about the science behind the different yeast strains that flavor our favorite craft beers from founder Chris White. White Labs is now working with Synthetic Genomics and other partners to sequence and characterize the whole genome sequences of 150 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains used for commercial beer and wine.

The primary goal of these studies is to understand the genetics of each strain in order to improve brewing processes and ultimately make better beer. Additionally, the research will serve as a resource for beer brewers, as the data will be shared in a format suitable for wide use. Whether you’re a beer brewer or a genomics researcher, this event will be both interesting and useful for you.

This event is sponsored by SGI-DNA, A Synthetic Genomics company which provides the bioinformatics software used for these studies, as well as other products and services to advance genomics research. Directions: From the west: From the 805 North or South exit Mira Mesa Blvd, head east for 2.0 miles, the Green Flash Tasting Room will be on the left/north side of the street at Flanders Drive. From the east: From the 15 North or South exit Mira Mesa Blvd, head west for 3.6 miles, the Green Flash Tasting Room will be on the right/north side of the street at Flanders Drive.

Parking: The Green Flash lot holds about 70 cars, so come early and carpool if you’d like to park there. You can also park on the street, but be very mindful that there are some poorly marked ‘no parking’ areas, especially on Sequence where there is a center lane.
