Details: Director, New Ventures-9861141114 Description Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JLABS (“JLABS”) is a division of Johnson & Johnson Innovation (“JJI”). JJI and JLABS are recruiting a Director, New Ventures, for JLABS new life sciences incubator, JLABS@TMC at the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston (“JLABS@TMC”). The goal of JJII is to advance transformative healthcare solutions that improve the lives of people around the world and, in so doing, to deliver value to Johnson & Johnson (“J&J”). JJI accomplishes this by catalyzing new science and technology through collaboration and exchange of ideas. This growing team is looking for a colleague inspired to help build and innovate new ways of fostering the life-science ecosystem. As part of a small and focused team, each person working at JJI plays a critical role. The successful applicant will be a key player in helping toshape the innovation ecosystem in Texas by initiating and managing relationships with prospective external partners, supporting diligence and transactions, and by contributing to the success of new initiatives and existing partnerships as an active member of cross-functional teams. Role: SOURCE COMPANIES: This Director will source companies for JLABS and for JJI deal teams in alignment with J&J focus areas in three sectors: biopharma (including diagnostics), medical devices, and consumer healthcare. The geographic focus will be Texas and surrounding areas. This sourcing function will include attracting “rock star companies” by proactive recruitment within expanded networks of academic centers, venture capitals firms, and serial entrepreneurs, and performing diligence on prospect companies to ensure strategic fit. Activities will be performed in close collaboration with JJI deal teams and with Johnson & Johnson Innovation, JJDC (J&J’s corporate venture capital group) teams. Build NewCo’s: This Director will actively work with different academic scientists, life sciences entrepreneurs, and J&J employees to identify transformational and strategically relevant. Once the Director has identified such science, he or she must be able to build a new company (integrated, lean, semi-virtual, or virtual) to optimally develop it to a value inflection point for J&J. As needed, JLABS staff may serve as part of the interim management team. MANAGE PORTFOLIO (Johnson & johnson innovation and JLABS PORTFOLIO): This Director will assess the portfolio as it builds and identify gaps that must be filled, in the context of the technological strengths of the region. This Director will also mentor and guide portfolio companies by providing networking, education, and resource access opportunities to build the “unfair advantage” for JLABS start-ups. manage COMPANIES through deal completion: This Director will lead JJI’s deal-making activities in Texas, from company identification through to deal completion, on-boarding into JLABS@TMC, and ongoing alliance management. This will include tracking progress of JJI’s portfolio in Texas and surrounding areas, and providing quarterly updates. SITE Leader: This Director will be the site manager for the JJI JLABS@TMC location will be the Team Leader for the onsite team. EXTERNAL SPOKESPERSON: This role will be the external voice of JJI and of JLABS@TMC to the region. Culture: In order to support JLABS’ mission, the successful applicant will be expected to: – Proactively interact with the healthcare community in Texas, develop strong, positive relationships with the constituents of the innovation ecosystem, and ensure JLABS is top-of-mind and positively regarded; – Collaborate with internal teams and potential partners to identify and triage opportunities, support diligence activities, and contribute to the deal terms and negotiations as either a JLABS client or as a partner for JJI and its affiliates, using a collaborative win-win approach; – Bring a high level of creativity and professionalism to scouting, diligence, deal creation, deal execution, and alliance management; – Help establish and maintain a positive, high-energy, and fun working environment; and – Foster a proactive “can do” culture of shared responsibility wherein team members collaborate to solve problems. Key Expectations: The successful applicant will: – Have deep experience and understanding of the biopharma, and/or the medical device and/or the consumer healthcare products industries. – Have demonstrated experience in initiating, establishing and managing partnerships with academic institutions and companies, including the interplay between internal and external stakeholders; – Have experience as part of negotiation team, with a demonstrated ability to contribute to establishing relationships at a fast pace while developing a collegial, collaborative relationship with a potential partner; – Be comfortable working with other team members, including scientific leads, transaction, legal, finance, marketing, and commercial teams to progress and complete partnerships; – Be comfortable operating in a start-up like environment within a large, global healthcare company; – Be of a collaborative mindset and a strong team player; – Be a strong communicator to develop and present strategic and scientific rationale to key internal constituencies; – Be curious to think about, develop and present innovative ways for outreach and interaction with the healthcare ecosystem, and for “out-of-the-box” ideas; – Be willing to take on responsibilities for helping to develop and strengthen J&J’s shared culture. J2W: LI NA Qualifications Qualifications: A minimum of an MD or PhD degree is required, and a MBA degree is preferred. At least 6 years of relevant professional experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry is required; drug discovery and/or drug development experience is preferred. Start-up company experience is preferred. Experience in business development, technology transfer, management consulting, and/or venture capital investing is required. Experience in the evaluation and execution of a diverse set of business development opportunities is required. Demonstrated adaptability to work across functions and therapeutic areas is required. Some travel (mostly Texas and western U.S., but some east-coast or international) will be required. This position is located in Houston, TX and requires up to 30% travel. BE VITAL in your career.
