We’re going to try something new for the San Diego Biotechnology Network in September. The folks at Halozyme have offered to start hosting events quarterly at their site in Sorrento Valley, and we’ll kick of the first event learning about their exciting science September 28th. They focus on therapeutics that work subcutaneously by targeting the extracellular matrix (the image is from a mural in their lobby) and have had lots of great news lately, so it will be nice to hear more. As always we’ll have plenty of time for networking in a casual atmosphere, and we’ll provide a light dinner. Hope to see you there!

June 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the sequencing of the human genome. As Francis Collins has pointed out, “we invariably overestimate the short-term impacts of new technologies and underestimate their longer-term effects.” As a member of the community for 14 years, I can tell you that this is true for San Diego, as the expectations in 2000 were likely too high, but the last ten years have brought unexpected progress in many areas.
San Diego has a great ecosystem to take advantage of these exciting longer-term benefits, ranging from our expertise in creating cutting edge research tools, to ground breaking drug discoveries, to new classes of diagnostics, to the exciting new field of synthetic genomics. Of course, Craig Venter has given us a big vote of confidence by relocating here. Our January Speed Networking event went so well that we promised we’d do it again so that you can meet as many local biotech professionals as possible in one night. How does it work? SDBN June 23rd Networking Event Featuring Advanced BioHealing | |

Advanced BioHealing (ABH) is a great local company that has turned their product for diabetic foot ulcers, Dermagraft, into a success story for regenerative medicine. I met them at the BIO convention in May and wrote a blog post about their work. They really impressed me, and we thought SDBN members would be interested in hearing their story. ABH doesn’t fit neatly into a single category (perhaps somewhere between medical devices and stem cells, according to the ‘buckets’ we used in our 2010 poll), but perhaps that is part of their success. As we’ve discussed, San Diego Biotech has seen its share of companies who have difficulties traversing the ‘valley of death’ leading to product commercialization, so we think this story is of great interest.
Kathy McGee, Advanced BioHealing’s Vice President and General Manager, will give a short presentation (Bio/Abstract), and representatives from ABH will be on hand to network with throughout the event. Drug development is an area that, according to our 2010 poll, you are interested in, and in previous meetings we’ve discussed that San Diego biotech could grow if we would better complement our drug discovery capabilities with drug development. The SDBN was approached by Rondaxe, a drug development services company, with an idea for an event which will highlight companies they work with from outside the San Diego region. The event will be held May 27th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., and a light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please join us, the full description and agenda follows, and you can register here.
In coordination with one major consulting firm and one important CRO in the Pharma arena (Rondaxe and TD2), Helsinn Advanced Synthesis is organizing a drug development symposium. Three major companies involved in API Manufacturing, CMC Services/Consulting and Clinical Development will give a short technical and educational presentation related to their expertise.

San Diego Biotechnology Network’s March 16th Event: Translational Research: San Diego’s Successes and Challenges | |

These days we hear a lot about the possibilities of translational research, which promises to better apply innovations from academia for public good. Who’s been successful locally in applying this model, and what are the challenges our region faces? We are lucky to have two thought leaders successfully implementing translational research in San Diego, come hear their stories and discuss how this model can be used to stimulate growth at our March 16th event.
We’ll hear from Gary Firestein, M.D., UCSD Dean of Translational Medicine (Bio) who will talk about ‘New Paradigms for Drug Discovery.’ Dr. Firestein was a member of our July panel (summary) and is incredibly knowledgeable, doing exciting work, and very interested in engaging in discussions about the promise of translational research/medicine and the issues we face.
Beth Anne Baber, Ph.D., M.B.A, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Nicholas Conor Institute for Pediatric Cancer Research (TNCI), will speak about ‘New Translational Research Models for Battling Rare Diseases’ (more info). Dr. Baber is one of my personal heroes as she founded TNCI after her son was diagnosed with a rare cancer. TNCI was described as a ‘translational research catalyst’ in a recent California Healthcare Institute report (full report PDF, see p. 53). Dr. Baber is understandably very passionate about her work, and it will be interesting to hear how the institute is using translational research to fight childhood cancer.
We know you’re interested in Translational Research based on our 2010 poll, and we want to make sure you will be able to learn what this model means to you. We’ll have a ‘mini-panel’ after the talks so you can ask questions, and we’ll also solicit questions beforehand. We had a great time in 2008/2009 getting to know San Diego Biotech professionals, and we appreciate the feedback you gave us about 2010 events. Let’s kick off the new year by talking about you! Our January event will be focused on honing your networking and interviewing skills and helping you maximize your career potential in 2010.
The event will include speed networking (described below) along with talks from the experts at PROVEN Scientific Staffing and RxResearch Staffing titled ‘Understanding Behavioral Styles of Interviewers’ (more info) & ‘Outsourcing Trends’ (more info), respectively. These two topics offer valuable insights for any professional looking to further his/her career (we know that’s you!). Aerotek will also be on hand, and we’re going to have as many job listings and hiring managers as possible at the event. Also, check out the SDBN jobs page and subscribe to updates. SPEED NETWORKING: Here’s how it works – You will meet a handful of local professionals during a number of fast paced sessions. At the end of each session, participants will pair up with their next networking opportunity. In just a few minutes, participants will share business cards, history and offer new contacts with valuable information about their business. For example:

- What contacts do you have in the area in which I am seeking a job?
- How might we do business together?

You’ve got an idea for a company or a product that you think is really great. What are the next steps? The September San Diego Biotechnology Network (SDBN) event will feature Intellikine, a leader in the development of innovative, small molecule drugs for the treatment of cancer, inflammation and autoimmune diseases, and recently in the news for raising $51M in VC funding. Troy Wilson, Ph.D., CEO, will give a short presentation, and as always there will be plenty of time to ask questions and interact with representatives from Intellikine.
Troy Wilson is the President, CEO and a founder of Intellikine, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of small molecule drugs that target the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway for the treatment of cancer, inflammation and other diseases. Dr. Wilson is a serial entrepreneur who previously has co-founded several San Diego based companies, including Ambrx and Phenomix. In his presentation, Dr. Wilson will describe Intellikine’s formation, the scientific and clinical rationale behind its drug discovery programs, its business development and corporate strategy, and how the company was able recently to raise $51 million in venture capital in a very challenging market. The presentation should be of interest to scientists, entrepreneurs, clinicians and anyone interested in how to translate world-class academic science into a leading biotech company.

San Diego County biotech in 2008 represented the third largest community for developing the next generation of biopharmaceuticals and cutting edge therapies. The impact of the financial crisis and funding shortfall is accelerating trends set by outsourcing and offshoring. Yet there is light at the end of the tunnel. Many companies based in San Diego are making breakthroughs and driving changes with their leading technologies. SDBN and PGC200 are partnering to bring you key people from these companies so that you can hear directly how these changes will help our economy and how we can adapt to prosper.
