SDBN April 7th #AACR14 Downtown Happy Hour

Downtown Happy Hour? You asked for it, you got it! Results from our 2014 SDBN member poll indicated that you wanted happy hours during upcoming conferences downtown. The American Association of Cancer Research’s 2014 Annual Meeting (#AACR14) will bring 18,000 researchers, professionals, and clinicians to downtown San Diego April 5-9. We’ve planned a networking happy hour a short walk from the meeting April 7th from 6:00-9:00. Meet cancer researchers and local professionals in a casual atmosphere. New SDBN Partnering Meetings a Success

A new variation on networking by the San Diego Biotechnology.Network was a smashing success.  Held at the Green Flash Brewery, the addition of the partnering event offered a great opportunity for companies to meet for 10 minute intervals with individuals wanting to talk to them.  This new partnering technique offered great opportunities for both employers and prospective employees.  One hundred and fifty meetings took place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm with many companies participating.

Building San Diego Biotech Event October 28 2013: Incubate, Communicate, Collaborate

Funding challenges across the board have resulted in many creative solutions for local biotech entrepreneurs, including using shared resources in life science incubators or finding money outside of venture capital. Additionally, organizations such as the San Diego Entrepreneur Exchange and the San Diego Biotechnology Network (SDBN) have formed to address these challenges through increased communication and networking. SDBN June 24th Speed Networking Event: Focus On Mentoring

During the recent Women in Science and Technology event sponsored by AWIS, I was reminded of the importance of mentoring through sessions at the conference and in speaking with scientists. I realized the SDBN could make a difference by providing a mentoring program to help our members. We’ll work out the details based on your feedback, and initially we’ve identified the topics listed below and plan to match mentors and mentees based on your interests.

SDBN February 25th 2013 Event: Reproductive Biology Research At The San Diego Zoo and Beyond

We are lucky to live in southern California for many reasons, one is that it is home to the world famous San Diego Zoo. The zoo does great science to conserve species, led by equally renowned reproductive biology researchers. Dr. Barbara Durrant, Director of Reproductive Physiology at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, will speak at our February 25th event about their latest research developments.

SDBN September 24th 2012 Event: Biotech and Beer

Did you know that Louis Pasteur discovered microorganisms and developed his technique for killing them, pasteurization, while studying beer? He was also a master brewer and wrote a book on the subject. Beer and life science have a long history, indeed even enzymes were discovered by studying yeast fermentation.
In San Diego, we are lucky to be a hub for both biotech and beer, and we’ve found a very interesting intersection of the two in White Labs, a local company creating high quality yeast strains for breweries. The company was started …

SDBN August 21st 2012 Event At The Sanford Consortium For Regenerative Medicine

The Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine is a stem cell research facility representing a collaboration between five of San Diego’s finest research institutions: Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, The Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute and the University of California, San Diego, and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology. This new “collaboratory” opened in November of 2011, ideally located between the institutions in La Jolla, and demonstrates the power and potential of working together to fight disease.
