Biolegend: BioLegend at ASCB/IFCB 2014

December 17, 2014 – 5:00 pm

Last week, like every year, BioLegend was present at the 2014 ASCB/IFCB Meeting (American Society for Cell Biology/International Federation for Cell Biology), which was held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Located at the edge of Chinatown, and just a few blocks away from the Old City Cultural District, the venue was large enough to accommodate the several thousand attendees and exhibitors present at the event.

Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Traditionally, a large number of the scientists presenting their work at this conference use microscopy as the most important tool in their research. Thus, this meeting is a perfect opportunity to learn about interesting research based on this technique, as well as the improvements and new equipment available to perform it.

The evolution of a Nobel Prize: From 1865 to 2014.

Of course most, if not all, of the research presented made use of several techniques, not just microscopy. They included western blots, flow cytometry, and several biochemistry techniques. Among the talks, I was most interested in was the work of Yuexin Xu et. al., from the University of Rochester Medical Center. In their research, the authors describe a method to control the trafficking of adoptively transferred T cells using light and photoactivatable chemokine receptors. CXCR4 was made responsive to light (PA-CXCR4) and these cells were transferred to a mouse cancer model. This receptor is involved in T cell trafficking, and transmits the signal in response to 505-nm light. Activation of PA-CXCR4 induced T-cell polarization and migration. Directing light onto a melanoma implant recruited PA-CXCR4–expressing tumor-targeting cytotoxic T cells and improved the efficacy of adoptive T-cell transfer immunotherapy, resulting in reduction of tumor growth in mice.

You can read the recently published paper in PNAS.

Other interesting presentations provided some evidence of intracellular signaling molecules that could be involved in neuronal regeneration, a very important field of research that can have a great impact on the therapeutics of diseases in the central nervous system. Csk binding protein (CBP), a Src-family scaffolding protein, could be involved in the transduction of the signal from Thy-1 in this process, along with stimulation from αvβ3 integrin.

Where will your signaling experiment take you?

The next ASCB/IFCB meeting will be right here, in San Diego, December 12th – 16th, 2015. We invite you to come to our booth and share your impression of the conference with us, as well as your feedback regarding which reagents you think will help you develop your project. We would love to hear from you about any areas that we can improve upon to support your research. In the meantime, you can check out our Microscopy page, as we will keep adding content to it in the future.
