During our 5-year history, we’ve learned quite a bit about life scientists in the region, the ups and downs they face, and we strive to respond to the needs we see. We hear from many working in university and institutional labs that they would like to learn more about careers outside academia. Contrary to popular opinion there, acquiring a tenure track position is truly the rare and “alternative” career. Sequestration adds to the difficulty in finding a position and funding. The changes in science communication that we discussed in our April meeting present both challenges and opportunities for our region to grow and provide more employment for our researchers.
At our August 26th SDBN event, we will explore several “alternative” careers which we see as growth areas and important for our region. Our speakers will discuss the how, what, and why of their career choices, and we will ask for feedback during registration so we can get your questions answered. Additionally, we’ll start with “Networking Bingo” at the beginning of the night to help you meet as many people as possible, and we’ll also use our “smart nametags” to help you out. We will also have as our guest Karyn Traphagen of ScienceOnline to discuss our local chapter of this related and transformative organization.
