Science communication, or SciComm, is becoming more popular among researchers—it was a top interest for 2018 events in the SDBN poll. We have been hosting SciComm events since 2012 and firmly believe that it is very important for scientists to effectively communicate their work to the public, media, and policy makers to ensure both a better understanding and continued funding. We’ll hold two SciComm events this year, the second one will cover careers in SciComm in the fall, and local science communicator Neil Thompson is spearheading both events (you can help too, ask how at the event).
There are many scientists making a difference in San Diego through SciComm programs such as Fleet Science Center?s Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar, the League of Extraordinary Scientists & Engineers, 500 Women Scientists, and the March for Science San Diego (organized by the newly formed nonprofit San Diego for Science). This event is open to anyone who wants to hear from and support these thought leaders who are helping scientists communicate their science and make a difference locally and globally.
You can make a difference by interacting with our event panelists to learn about their organizations, methods, events, and opportunities to get involved. Register at the bottom of this page, and be sure to check out the panelists and organizations beforehand. Pose any questions you have while registering so we can have an engaging event. All $15 ticket sale proceeds will be donated to the panelists? nonprofit organizations, so you?re helping by simply attending!
Also, it?s Pi day and we’ll be serving Julian Pies! What better way to spend it than learning about science communication and networking?
